Kumar: Politics? It’s an option
Saturday, September 24th, 2011“I had to prove it because I was so tired of the cat calls. Men are like that: when you break their egos, they shut up,”

POLITICS is something he will consider in the future, but only if he gets to keep his waist-long hair, said iconic drag performer Kumar.
“Let’s see. Maybe that’s the next thing when (Singaporeans) reach a certain level. It will be interesting,” he said. “But if they ask me to cut my hair, I won’t. The hair comes along.” He laughed, hands clasping his lustrous locks protectively.
He revealed this at last Tuesday’s launch of Kumar: From Rags To Drag, written by former journalist Ivan Lim to commemorate the artist’s 20th year in show business.
It isn’t clear whether Kumar’s political ambition is for real, but Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan did turn up to grace the book launch. And former foreign-affairs minister George Yeo provided a blurb for the book, calling the performer “one of a kind” and “a treasure”.
Throughout the interview at the 3-Monkeys Cafe, where Kumar performs thrice a week, the 43-year-old emphasises his desire to make life better for fellow Singaporeans. In fact, he knows exactly what kind of a politician he would be.
“I don’t want to be a minister. I want to be a people’s person,” he said. “I want to counsel teenagers, youngsters and even those in their 30s and 40s.
“Those who have lost their goals, I want them to see that all is not lost.”
He also feels for middle-class Singaporeans, who he said “do not receive any help”, adding that he understands because “I’m also in it”.
Of course, he’s acutely aware of his limits. “I know I can’t counsel because I don’t have that kind of education and because of what I am, it is even harder,” he said.
He came out of the closet at the launch and is the first Singaporean celebrity to publicly declare that he is gay.
In his 143-page biography, he recounted several childhood experiences which had an impact on his life, including one about a family friend who raped him.
He was also constantly made fun of as an “Ah Kua” (a colloquial term for effeminate men) back in his army days.
He knew then he had to show that he was no pushover - and he did so by outrunning his army mates in the 2.4km run.
“I had to prove it because I was so tired of the cat calls. Men are like that: when you break their egos, they shut up,” he said without a blink of an eye.
The biography also delves into his relationships, and the thrilling days of the Channel 5 comedy-sketch series The Ra Ra Show and the heyday of cabaret venue Boom Boom Room in the 1990s.
But Kumar believes the book will never fully define him and his larger-than-life personality.
“You don’t have to understand me at the end of the book. You don’t have to cry or feel sorry for me after closing the book. I don’t want that,” he said.
“I just want you to understand that if you want to live a dream and do something that nobody else is following, do it.”

The Prayer - Celine Dion & Andrea Bocelli
Tuesday, September 11th, 2007
I pray you’ll be our eyes, and watch us where we go.
And help us to be wise in times when we don’t know
Let this be our prayer, when we lose our way
Lead us to the place, guide us with your grace
To a place where we’ll be safe
La luce che tu hai
I pray we’ll find your light
nel cuore restera
and hold it in our hearts.
a ricordarci che
When stars go out each night,
eterna stella sei
The light you have
I pray we’ll find your light
will be in the heart
and hold it in our hearts.
to remember us that
When stars go out each night,
you are eternal star
Nella mia preghiera
Let this be our prayer
quanta fede c’e
when shadows fill our day
How much faith there’s
Let this be our prayer
in my prayer
when shadows fill our day
Lead us to a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe
Sognamo un mondo senza piu violenza
un mondo di giustizia e di speranza
Ognuno dia la mano al suo vicino
Simbolo di pace, di fraternita
We dream a world without violence
a world of justice and faith.
Everyone gives the hand to his neighbours
Symbol of peace, of fraternity
La forza che ci da
We ask that life be kind
e il desiderio che
and watch us from above
ognuno trovi amor
We hope each soul will find
intorno e dentro se
another soul to love
The force his gives us
We ask that life be kind
is wish that
and watch us from above
everyone finds love
We hope each soul will find
around and inside
another soul to love
Let this be our prayer
Let this be our prayer, just like every child
Need to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe
Need to find a place, guide us with your grace
Give us faith so we’ll be safe
E la fede che
hai acceso in noi,
sento che ci salvera
It’s the faith
you light in us
I feel it will save us

The Power of the Dream - Celine Dion
Tuesday, September 11th, 2007
Deep within each heart
There lies a magic spark
That lights the fire of our imagination
And since the dawn of man
The strenght of just “I can”
Has brought together people of all nations
There’s nothing ordinary
In the living of each day
There’s a special part
Every one of us will play
Feel the flame forever burn
Teaching lessons we must learn
To bring us closer to the power of the dream
As the world gives us its best
To stand apart from all the rest
It is the power of the dream that brings us here
Your mind will take you far
The rest is just pure heart
You’ll find your fate is all your own creation
Every boy and girl
As they come into this world
They bring the gift of hope and inspiration
Feel the flame forever burn
Teaching lessons we must learn
To bring us closer to the power of the dream
The world unites in hope and peace
We pray that it will always be
It is the power of the dream that brings us here
There’s so much strength in all of us
Every woman child and man
It’s the moment that you think you can’t
You’ll discover that you can
Feel the flame forever burn
Teaching lessons we must learn
To bring us closer to the power of the dream
The world unites in hope and peace
We pray that it will always be
It is the power of the dream that brings us here
Feel the flame forever burn
Teaching lessons we must learn
To bring us closer to the power of the dream
The world unites in hope and peace
We pray that it will always be
It is the power of the dream that brings us here
The power of the dream
The faith in things unseen
The courage to embrace your fear
No matter where you are
To reach for your own star
To realize the power of the dream
